LOCATION

The Gold Coast & Hamburg Historic District, northwest from central Davenport's downtown, covers over 25 square blocks. With its magnificent views of the Mississippi River and downtwn Davenport, the neighborhood was quickly filled with middle to upper class German immigrants, including many prosperous and prominent residents of the city who played an important part in shaping the history of Davenport.

The historic homes of the Gold Coast & Hamburg Historic District contain some of the oldest and most significant architectural styles in the State of Iowa.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

The dominant style of the early residences was Greek Revival. During the late 1850's through 1870's, a house type that was popular in the community was the 2-story, 3-bay front gable house, a form derived from earlier Greek Revival temples.

The later architectural styles were Gothic Revival, Second Empire, Italianate, Queen Anne and a variety of vernacular interpretations of these styles.

ASSOCIATION'S VISION

The Gold Coast & Hamburg Historic District Association believes one of Davenport's greatest assets is it's history and historic homes. Historic sites and areas are the physical evidence of our collective past. The vision of the Gold Coast & Hamburg Historic District Association is to recognize, restore and protect Davenport's historic homes and resources.

While continuously identifying historic and significant resources within the Gold Coast & Hamburg Historic District, GCHHDA will encourage single family housing, protect the district from thoughtless demolition or neglect, provide resources for rehabilitation and preservation, and encourage adaptive reuse of historic properties to provide economic viability, while maintaining the architectural integrity.
